A friend wrote a short piece that we sing at St. Lydia's as we pray. The text is simply, "what we need is here." It's drawn from this poem by Wendell Barry.
Geese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes. Abandon,
as in love or sleep, holds
them to their way, clear
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here. And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye,
clear. What we need is here.
Thank you for this, Emily. My Lenten practice is to read a poem a day. I had nearly forgotten today, and you sent me this! How wonderful.
